Celebrate Feast Day
Madonna’s Statue Borne in March
Madonna dei Martiri or Mother of Martyrs, one of the many titles afforded the mother of Christ, dominated the stage yesterday afternoon as her three-foot tall statue was borne through the streets of lower Hoboken; a festival observed every Labor Day weekend though the actual feast day is tomorrow.

The festive march from St. Francis Roman Catholic Church;, Third and Jefferson sts., to the headquarters of Society of Madonna dei Matiri, Fourth and Adams sts., and back to the St. Francis again started at 2 p. m. and concluded late last night. The parade climaxed the 37th annual celebration which began Saturday and will end tonight.

As Madonna was borne along on the shoulders of four members of the Molfettessi society, who hail from the county of Bari in Italy, the march was punctuated by the solemn rumble of drums and the blasts of fireworks and aerial bombs.

Some 15,000, Molfetta-born men and women are estimated to live in lower Hoboken. Adams st., adorned for several blocks with fern and evergreen decorations, was crowded with people and vendors offering zeppole and calzone, friut ices, hats, canes and dolls.

Covered With Money

The statue itself was covered with real money, dollars and five dollars bills, stuck to its base, and about the shoulder of the madonna and the figure of the Christ child she bore in her arms were hung watches, rings and other jewelry, all donations from the people.

Figurines made to the likeness of the Madonna itself were stationed in the windows of homes or in their front yards with vigil lamps burning beside them and American flags strung from window sills.

A short ceremony was held in front of St. Mary Hospital, Where the marchers and lookers-on were addressed in Italian by Father Joseph Bernasconi of Philadelphia and Rev. Crispin Fuino, OFM Conv., pastor of St. Francis Church. Sabino Sciencalepore, president of the society, presented the hospital with a monetary contribution.

Dignitaries March

Among the marchers were Cosmo De Bari, U. S. correspondent for the Italian newspaper. Molfetta Nostra; Robert Ranieri of Hoboken Unico, Hoboken Finance Director Thomas A. Gallo, and Councilmen Rudolph N. Ranieri, Stephen Cappiello, Francis Finnerty and John J. Palmieri.

On the committee in charge of the affair were Frank Illuzzi, Pietro Prezioso, Vito Angione, Giacomo Cantatore and G. Binetti.

Officers are, in addition to the president, Felice Tatulli, ; vice president, and Sergio Germinario Vincenzo De Pinto, Ignazio Sciancalepore, John Riccardi, Antonio Gadaleta, Corrado Azzollini Mauro Minervini, Domenick D Vincenzo and Joseph Soriano.

The Feast of the Madonna dei Martiri from which the Hoboken Italian Festival is derived was born in 1399 in a small Adriatic town in Italy called Molfetta. Like most things, the feast started out small; it has evolved into an annual waterfront extravaganza... bright lights, international foods, picturesque landscape, large crowds, and even a unique “Blessing of the Fleet.” We have painstakingly emulated this great Italian tradition in Hoboken, NJ. And like the original feast in Italy, the 78th Annual Hoboken Italian Festival has become one of the area’s favorite summer affairs.

A sincere thanks, on behalf of the Feast Committee of the Madonna dei Martiri Society, goes to all who have contributed to the success of the Feast.
