|Scope & Content||
Caricature of ' Super Snapper ' Joseph Cangelosi, General Superintendent, Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Hoboken at Bayonne with passenger ship Queen Elizabeth 2, December 1979.
Pen-and-ink on white poster board, 10-3/4" wide x 14-7/8" high; signed at lower right Bill Dick, 12/79. Reverse is blank.
A cartoon of Cangelosi in a hard hat labeled "Super Snapper" and a bubble with him ordering "Away All Snappers!!!" (Per Cangelosi, April 2011: 'Snapper' was his nickname in the yards.) He wears a shirt and necktie plus a long sleeve sweater (which he stated was his routine work dress through his years at Beth Steel) plus an insulated vest. He holds a walkie-talkie and his left arm is pointing away. The ocean liner Queen Elizabeth 2 is in the background. Two men are are seen walking away in the distance. The left character is stating "Easy Ray, Take It Easy" and comforting his shorter companion who keeps repeating "Duplicate Book" eight times. (Ray was Ray Costello, a Hoboken estimator.) A wooden sign in the ground at the lower right is painted "Dec. 18 15 12 (with 18 and 15 'x'-ed out) or Bust!!!"
This was the passenger ship's annual refit and repair. It was its second time at Bayonne, the first being in Dec. 1977 - Jan. 1978. The operation of this Beth Steel yard was managed from the Hoboken Beth Steel Shipyard where Cangelosi and his senior staff had their administrative offices. The work took place from November 21 to December 21, 1979.
Per Cangelosi, the work schedule was intense and the company was under great pressure to maintain it or even finish ahead of schedule [as the image suggests] as the vessel would have been booked for holiday passages.
|Notes||Online references and tribute sites offer more information plus the book, QE2, by Ronald W. Warwick (NY:Norton, 1999) refers to this refit on page 110; it also refers to a 1977 refit at Bayonne on pages 108-109 plus a small photograph. See photo 2011.025.0390 for an image related to the 1977-1978 work.|
