K&E College Field Book 360C. Made by Keuffel & Esser Co., Hoboken, 1948. Booklet, stiff printed pressboard covers with cloth tape spine reinforcement; 4-5/8" wide x 7-1/4" high. 6 printed preliminary pages with title and advertisements plus 6 at the rear; main body 64 un-numbered pages printed alternately with lines or a grid.
Item was used by a student, R.E. Cassidy, for survey field work: Party No. 8B, Spring Survey Camp 1948, Dawson College (see notes).
Cassidy's entries are all in pencil. He made an index on on the first grid leaf, skipped two pages and then numbered the remaining pages 1-61.
Page 1: Grid elevations (Mt Johnson)
Page 7: Low Red Traverse (Angles by Double Deflection)
Page 13: Profile Leveling Mt Johnson
Page 19: Low Red Traverse (Angles by Azimuth)
Page 23: Dawson Farm Survey (chaining)
Work is dated May 11 to May 31, 1948.
It shows typical data and sketches made using field instruments such as transits, levels, stadia, leveling rods and chains.
The record book itself is also typical of many different styles issued by K&E for different operations as well as for the education of future engineers, architects and surveyors. As mentioned, it included ads front and back for K&E instruments, tools and accessories. The professional versions usually did not have ads.
|Notes||The Dawson College of this item was apparently in Saint John's (Saint Jean-sur-Richelieu), Quebec, Canada as the Mount Johnson (Mont Sant-Gregoire) surveyed is also in Quebec. (There are other Dawson Colleges.) The school did offer courses in surveying, sketching, civil engineering, architecture, etc.|
