|Scope & Content||
Two religious pendants belonging to Florence or Madeline Miller of Hoboken, no date, circa 1905-1911.
Pendant 1: oval gold finished metal mount with open filagree border; depiction of Christ and the Sacred Heart on printed decal mounted on mother-of-pearl with cover glass. 7/8" wide x 1-3/8" high plus ring and 1/4" satin ribbon.
Pendant 2: saint medal, high relief bronze, double sided, 7/8" diameter.
Pendant 2, side 1: S. Francisce Xaveri Ora Pro Nobis. (Saint Francisco Xavier)
Pendant 2, side 2: S. Ignatide Loyola Ora Pro Noris[sic]. (Saint Ignatius Loyola Ora Pro Nobis)
These items were from the family papers of the sisters.
Both attended and were graduates of Academy of the Sacred Heart, school at 713 Washington St., Hoboken. Florence graduated in 1909 and Madeline in 1911. And since these items were accompanied in this accession by the 1911 graduation program for Madeline, they could probably be attributed to her ownership.
They may not have necessarily been associated with the school. They could have been gifts to either one of them for a holiday or associated with some religious occasion such as a feast or ceremony such as confirmation.
