|Scope & Content||
Needlework patch: 'Sacred Heart' belonging to Florence or Madeline Miller, Hoboken, no date, attributed to 1909 or 1911. Various fabrics and threads, 2-1/4" wide x 3-1/2" high.
This item was from the family papers of the sisters.
Both attended and were graduates of Academy of the Sacred Heart, school at 713 Washington St., Hoboken. Florence graduated in 1909 and Madeline in 1911. And since this item was accompanied in this accession by the 1911 graduation program for Madeline, it could probably be attributed to her ownership. Whether this sampler was made by either of them or was a gift made by another person is unknown. Since both women were religious throughout their lives, it is also possible that this sampler was acquired or made at a later time although the fabric colors are suggestive of the 1900s.
