Scope & Content Admission ticket to Hoboken Cinemas showing of motion picture "Avatar" in 3-D, 409 Fourteenth St., Hoboken, Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010. Printed ticket stub, 1-5/8" x 2" high. See objects 2012.002.0005 for a pair of 3D eyeglasses used during the show.

Adult admission, $14.00. The movie theater was part of the chain, Clearview Cinemas, and had opened in its new multi-screen theater to the general public on October 23, 2009. (A ribbon cutting ceremony and special showing of a film was held on Wednesday, Oct. 21.)

Notes Avatar was not the first 3-D film, but it was done with new technology and became an event in its own right. Its success led to many other films being done in 3-D or converted to 3-D. At the same time, television manufacturers were bringing to market early versions of 3-D television.
