The Schaeffers. The Super-human Twins at The Fabian Theatre - Hoboken, Wed., Thurs., Fri., Sept. 18, 19, 20, (1930.)
Printed paper, 7-1/4" high x 15" wide, folded (roughly) to 5-1/4" wide.
The Fabian was at the southwest corner of Newark and Washington Streets. It opened in 1928 and featured vaudeville and stage acts plus motion pictures. This advertising handbill for the strongman and strongwoman act was printed in three languages and reflected the ethnic nature of Hoboken's population. There were significant German and Italian communities whose primary language was their (or their family's) country of origin. Also, it appealed to the foreign workers whose vessels used Hoboken docks.
Printed in black-and-white both sides. Each side has three panels.
Left panel: text in Italian.
center panel: photo of the The Schaeffers with English text below.
right panel: text in German.
left panel: text in German and same as side 1 right panel
center panel: English text corresponding to the foreign languages - text is the same as the English panel on side 1, but formatted differently and including the Fabian name and dates.
right panel: text in Italian and same as side 1 left panel
The English text under the photo on side 1 is essentially used with some editing and translation in all the other panels:
The Super-human Twins.
The Strongest Human Beings in the World.
SEE the only boy (20 years old) who can lift a live bull over his head.
SEE the only girl (20 years old) who lies on a bed of nails with a 450-pound anvil on her chest - who permits two of the strongest men of the audience to pound on the anvil with 16-pound sledge hammers.
SEE the only pair of human beings who allow three truck horses to walk across their bodies.
