I am delighted to extend greetings to everyone gathered in the birthplace of our national pastime to celebrate the 150th anniversary of baseball.
The story of baseball has in many ways been the story of America, and it all began right here with Alexander Cartwright, Jr., on Hoboken’s Elysian Fields. Since then, generations of Americans — a truly diverse group with grass-stained knees, muddy shoes, and battered gloves — have written the sport’s history in sandlots, backyards, and ball parks all across this country. Today, the world embraces baseball, and on diamonds from Panama to Japan, the game’s proud traditions endure.
Recognizing the important role that our state played in the birth and growth of baseball, I look to New Jersey’s Sports History Commission to help us proclaim our pride and tell the world the true story of baseball’s Hoboken roots. We may not have succeeded yet, but as a very famous New Jerseyan once said, "It ain’t over till it’s over," and our efforts will continue.
With all New Jersey, I celebrate this very special occasion, and I offer my best wishes to the citizens of Hoboken and to baseball fans everywhere.
