Coordinates: 18.581401.4512004 (west end); 18.581909.4511897
(east end).

Date of Construction: 1907-1912
Engineer/Contractor: J. W. Leahy, Hudson County Engineer; Owego Bridge Co., Owego. N.Y. (general contractor); McClintic-Marshall Construction Co., New York, N.Y. and Pittsburgh, Pa. (steel fabrication and erection); William B. Waldo, New York, N.Y. (concrete, paving, excavation).

Present Owner: Hudson County

Present Use: Vehicular and pedestrian bridge
Significance: The 14th Street Viaduct is one engineering solution among many that have been designed over the course of more than three centuries to solve the transportation challenge of climbing the Bergen Hill, a bluff running north-south along the west side of the Hudson River. The viaduct was built in 1907-1912 nsa vehicular bridge from Hoboken to West Hoboken (now part of Union City). Its engineers designed a structure that could negotiate an elevation change of 70 ft. and cross five city streets, a rail line, and a trolley line. The result was a distinctive, asymmetrical, 1,460-ft-long bridge composed of two Warren deck-truss spans and 27 riveted steel girder spans supported on a substructure of riveted steel bents and towers. The 14th Street Viaduct was representative of the engineering of most steel bridges in the early twentieth century; it was in no way aesthetic and in every way utilitarian and economical.

Project Information: This documentation was undertaken in 2009 on behalf of Hudson County in coordination with the New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office and in compliance with a memorandum of agreement to mitigate the bridge replacement.
