Signs, forty-five, for gate, yard, sidewalk or moving sales, various places in Hoboken, various dates in 1994.
Group of posters made for usage in promoting the sale of goods by residents (and in one case, a business) which represent a snapshot of domestic and social activity in the era. Collected by Hoboken resident Steve Covello in year of use.
They are interesting as examples of vernacular art as well the promotional text used to draw attention to the event and the offerings. The number of items also reveals a competitive environment for attracting customers as there were often multiple sales on the same dates.
Some are direct and very simple while others are quite involved in text as well as graphics. The variety displays a range of skills and intentions.
PDF on file.
Size of almost all are 8-1/2" x 11" leaves. as collected, have wear and tear from being taped, weathered, stapled or pinned. (May also be considered as: notice, flier, handbill, announcement, advertisement, poster, signage.)
Dating: only a few have the year stated; others were researched to establish that the dates. All dates are on a Saturday and/or a Sunday.
