The retirement was not final, he returned a few years later, but at the time of this article he was retiring and the benefit gala was his retirement party. It was important news about a cultural icon. The event was headlined by many notable performers and well-wishers including Sinatra. Many important attendees as the gala was major one for the motion picture industry and it had been promoted as his last public performance.
The article by Thomas Thompson was in the "Parting Shots" section at the back of the issue. It included a number of dressing room or backstage photos from his (then) last public performance on June 13, 1917 at the Ahmanson Theatre, Los Angeles. There are also a couple pages devoted to photos from earlier in his life and career.
