Details Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Hoboken Shipyard or Hoboken Yard (also sometimes called Plant.) Operated 1938-1982. Commonly called Beth Steel Hoboken.

Shipyard was originally extablished in 1890 by the W. & A. Fletcher Company; succeeded by United Dry Dock Co. (Fletcher Plant) in 1928; purchased by Bethlehem in 1938.

Work diary for 1941 of William Craig, employee of Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Hoboken Division. Craig was a supervisor as well as a photographer. The Museum does not own the original. It is present in the Museum's collections as digital scans and reference prints. This record has 184 images with all pages shown. The Museum also has his 1942 diary in the same form (2002.209.0003). The original was a 6" x 9" hardbound printed daily diary ("Deskaide, The Silent Secretary")as was typically available at stationery stores. It is filled in with pen or pencil by Craig with the names of vessels, locations, piers, work hours plus costs for meals, travel, and telephone calls.

Black photograph album with 22 different images documenting damages and repair work on an unidentified vessel, Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Hoboken, no date, ca. 1940. The album was found on the site of the former Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Hoboken, ca. 1990. It was a commercially available album typical of the period, 9-7/8" wide x 11-3/4" high, black leather-grained cloth covered boards and stamped "Photographs" with decorations on the cover. All leaves are black paper; cover is detached. The intended use of the album is not indicated. Although not marked as such, the photographs were taken by William Craig, an employee of the shipyard. Group of 17 idenfication file cards from the Bethlehem Steel Company, Hoboken Yard, Hoboken, no date, ca. 1938-1950. A broken run of cards numbered 754-771. The 3-1/8" high x 5" wide printed cards (one side only) were completed with typewritten data, "mug shot"-style photo and right thumb print of the employee along with their signature and that of a company representative. The card attests to their U.S. citizenship and being an accredited representative of the Bethelehem Steel Company. Report on the Installation of Oil Lubricated Stern Tube Bearings on the S.S. P. C. Spencer. Work done at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard, Hoboken, 1963. Three mimeographed typed leaves with outline description of the work followed by 14 black-and-white photographic images on 7 leaves of photostatic prints, each with with two images. The images are numbered in the text and with holographic ink on the photostat. Ten of the 14 images have typewritten captions in the image describing the work. Also present is an approved drawing (blueprint 30" high x 54" wide) for the work. A duplicate set of the image leaves as negatives is present. Many of the images show men at work.
