Group of six items about "Blackie," a mascot dog who was at the Holland America Line's Hoboken piers from 1944 until her death in 1950. Mostly a black Labrador breed, she had 43 pups in her years on the docks (which were sired by "O'Malley," a Hoboken Police mascot dog) and was the friend of the circa 300 people who worked at the company's dock. She had her evening meal with Harbormaster Marinus "Sparky" de Korne who was her primary caretaker who lived at 103 Fourth St., Hoboken, but from the articles it appears that many others oversaw her well-being. Letterhead: American Lead Pencil Co., Executive Offices, Hoboken, N.J.; typed letter to customer, Oct. 23, 1928 responding to a customer inquiry. Single leaf, 8-3/8" x 10-3/4" high. The back has a printed advertisement for selected products, copyrighted 1927. The letter was to a Mr. W. H. Humphries and is not signed, but initialed in red pencil. Use of a pencil, often colored, in correspondence was a company practice. The address of 220 Fifth Avenue, New York is overprinted in red lines and imprinted to the right of it in red is "Executive Offices, Hoboken, N.J." North of Fifth Street; Lot 2 Block No. 66. Printed document with holographic entries; embossed seal; 10-1/4" x 17" Property was sold for assessments on the land. Butts assigned the property on Jan. 19, 1868 to John M Board, his attorney.
