Name Hoboken High School
Details Circa 1897, the High School was in the Martha Institute at Sixth and Garden Streets. In 1910, the cornerstone was laid for a new High School on Garden and Fourth Streets; the building would cover about half the block north from Fourth St.and from Bloomfield to Garden Streets. It opened in 1911. (Dedication ceremony October 11, 1911.)

Architect for school was John T. Rowland, Jr. Another floor appears to have been added sometime in the mid-1920s. The school was renamed A.J. Demarest High School (in honor of the city's first superintendent of schools) sometime in the late 1920s or early 1930's.

In 1962 the High School moved to a new building covering the full block from Clinton Street to Grand St. between Eighth and Ninth Streets. Its name was returned to Hoboken High School. (The old high school near Church Square Park became a middle (junior high) school and is at present named A.J. Demarest Middle School.)
