Name Martha Institute
Details Park Avenue and Sixtth Street. Built 1866 on land donated to the German Lutheran Church at 600 Garden St. by the Stevens family and money donated by Martha Bayard Stevens. Institute building served for School for Industrial Education (Manual Training School prior to 1897 (moved to its own building at the rear of the Hoboken Public Library.)

It was the location of Hoboken High School from circa 1897 to 1911 when the new High School was built at 4th and Garden Sts. In 1917 it became Stevens School (successor to Stevens Preparatory School). After its 1935 merger with Hoboken Academy, becoming Stevens-Hoboken Academy it contiunued in use until the merged private school closed in 1970. Continued use as Stevens-Hoboken Academy until circa 1975-1976. Use after that was by the church. Original structure demolished circa 1998-1999 due to age and condition.

The Hudson School (a charter school) built a new structure in 2001-2002 that replaced it. This building followed the original style and profile of the original building

Cover artwork depicts the The Martha Institute at Sixth and Garden Streets where the High School was located for several decades up to 1911. This copy has name of Florence Miller inscribed by her on the cover. She is known to have attended high school at the Academy of the Sacred Heart from which she graduated in 1909.

Ceramic commemorative tile, 1776-1976 Bicentennial, Martha Institute, Hoboken, New Jersey, [1976.] 6" x 6" x 3/16" thick white tile with blue image from an old engraving. One of an unspecified series of tiles (at least eight) produced for the celebration of the American Bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence. Label on reverse with history of building; text source not indicated. Cork back with logo of manufacturer, Screen Craft Products, Inc, West Yarmouth, Mass. Tile has hanging grommet in the back.
