Details Founded in 1863 as a producer of fine leather and leather goods; tannery. Located at 300 Observer Highway, Hoboken. The site is a complex of industrial buildings with a named smokestack plus parking lots covering several acres. It's primary use since the 1980's has been for rental of space to artists and small businesses.

Metal wall sign: R. Neumann & Co. 9" high x 36" long x 3/4" thick. Black painted metal with white lettering. Ca. 10 guage sheet metal, formed beveled edge, hollow back. No date, ca. 1920. The company has been at 300 Observer Highway for at least 75 years. The lettering on the front is a routed-out serif face, in painted in white enamel, worn. The sign is formed from a single sheet with 3/4" wide 45-degree beveled edges soldered at the corners. One hole, ca. 1/2" diameter, on the flat surface near each corner for mounting use.

The organization's address was the same as the YMCA, 1301 Washington Street. The officers and board members were all from local businesses or organizations: Bethelehem Steel, Maxwell House Division, Stevens Institute, U.S. Testing Co., Hudson United Bank, Washington Savings Bank, Seatrain International, Henkel, Inc. and R. Neumann & Co.

Dark green paint all surfaces; block lettering painted in yellow. Worn. Company was once located in buildings and parking lots covering several acres at 300 Observer Highway, Hoboken. The original location of this sign on the site is stated by the donor as interior as it was recovered from discarded office furnishings and related materials.
