Name R.B. Davis Company
Details Manufacturer and distributor of Davis Baking Powder (also known as Davis O.K. Baking Powder), Cornstarch and Cocomalt and other products. Founded by Robert Benson Davis in 1879 or 1881 (both dates have been seen.) Factory in Hoboken on a block at Ferry (later Observer Highway) and Jackson to Harrison Streets. (Street address was stated as "Factory, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 & 18 Jackson St., Hoboken, N.J." on labels from 1890s.) Established manufacturing and distribution facility here the circa 1890-1891 and operated until sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s (end date not established at present.) Other later locations in Hoboken were at Park Avenue and 14th St. Company produced other products at this plant including Cocomalt and Swel Frosting Mixes. Also was the first distributor of Cut-Rite Waxed Paper.

The company was founded in New York City in 1879 or 1881 (both dates have been seen but the company used 1879 on mid twentieth century packaging) by Robert Benson Davis; located in early years at 112 Murrary Street - which included its early factory. The offices later moved to 15 Hudson St. and then 90 & 92 West Broadway (corner Chambers Street). Sometime in the World War I era, it moved it principal address to Hoboken.

Printed flat metal sheet, ca. 4-7/8" high (irregularly trimmed top edge) x 12-1/8" wide. Reverse has two 3/8" wide vertical marks indicating previous adhesive tape apparently for label that was on the reverse or mounting on a presentation board or a printer's file sheet/folder. The sheet was for a 12 ounce container of Cocomalt with promotional pricing banner across front panel: "6¢ [cents] Off, Pay Only Price Marked." While copyrighted 1927 and assumed that it was issued in that year, it may have been available or issued at later dates. Sixteen pages have three recipes per page which all call for the company's signature product which was made in Hoboken. Each is credited to a listener who created them, presumably radio program listeners responding to a promotion. The recipes have their names and at least their city, but many have the actual street address. No sponsored radio shows are named. Page [20] has an advertisement for Cocomalt

With original imprinted envelope with contemporary holographic ink list of the included recipes. Cards are not numbered, but are listed here in the order as stated by a contemporary owner on the envelope. All have different promotional text on the reverse, intitial phrase follows the baked item listed below. Obviously intended for school curriculum use, etc., and punched for inclusion in a binder, whether a ring or post is unknown. Curiously, quite a number of recipes do not use the company's products. Even those that do use baking powder or dry yeast baking powder do not specify the brand name. A rather "soft sell." Promotes the air-tight moisture-proof can and suggests leaving 1/3 of the inner parchment paper seal to level a teaspoon or other measure as depicted in the photo and drawing.
