It is an early view of River Walk and Sybil's Cave showing a bucolic Hoboken and a placid Hudson River with three sailboats in view. Visitors are seen at the Cave and in the distance along River Walk heading towards Elysian Fields. Landscape painter Gignoux (1816-1882) was born and trained in France; active in America as part of the Hudson River School from 1840 to the 1870s. The

An original copy of this print which was originally published in Germany in an edition of Meyer's Universum by the Bibliographic Institute Hildburghausen is archives catalog 2009.006.0136. The colored print appears the same.

Original artwork, fourteen, by Sigismond Schuster including four Hoboken scenes; pencil on paper, various places, circa 1850s, not later than 1857. Cream wove paper with rough tooth, no watermark, circa 6-8 point caliper; simple pamphlet binding. Fourteen pages, 6-1/2" high x 8" wide, most with graphite drawings. The only place ink is evident is a minor mark on drawing 32 at the top left. Remains of binding thread and tissue guard are with item. This original artwork was apparently part of a larger group of pages (there are stubs where there once were leaves), but the item has a certain integrity as found. Print was originally published in Germany in Meyer's Universum by Bibliographic Institute Hildburghausen. See notes for citation of New York edition. Another copy of this image is archives 2005.053.0005 for which the donor provided information (unverified) for that print as a printed engraving from the magazine, Ladies Wreath, 1848. It is the same in all respects as the print here with the added color except it is black ink only.

Hoboken Shore Railroad (Hoboken Railroad, Warehouse & Steamship Connecting Co.) article: New Electric Freight Locomotive. As published in The Railroad Gazette, Vol. XXX, No. 2, January 14, 1898, pg 25. Leaf removed from publication, ca. 10" wide x 14-1/2" high, folded. Full text is in notes. Three photo illustrations plus a map of Hoboken showing the route of the short line industrial railroad. It was more formally known then as the Hoboken Railroad Warehouse & Steamship Connecting Co. A sub-company of the Hoboken Land & Improvement Company, it was created and controlled by the Stevens family who are among the listed officers. It was formally re-named the Hoboken Shore Railroad in 1954.
