A tale of a boy, George Doscher, aged 16, of Hoboken trying to make it own his own and to save his little sister, Nellie, who was at the Hudson County Almshouse, from the "poorhouse." Their mother committed suicide and then their stepfather deserted them. George became employed, but fell ill enough go to Saint Mary Hospital. When he left it, it lived on the street, until a group of the Washington Street 'Crowd", boys of wealthy parents helped out by building him a hut (shanty) on Hudson Street between 12th and 13th Sts.
