On the west bank of the Hudson River, north of Jersey City and opposite Manhattan, in the heart of New York Harbor. Railroads D.L.&W. (Hoboken is eastern terminus of this R.R.), Erie, West Shore, Hudson & Manhattan R.R. Banks: branch, The First National Bank of Jersey City; Home Trust Co., Hoboken Bank for Savings in the City of Hoboken, Hudson Trust Co. of Union City, N. J., branches Newark & Hudson st; Seaboard Trust Co., Fourteenth & Washington St; Trust Co. of New Jersey, branch of Jersey City. Schools 10 public (6,353) including a high school and 2 junior high schools, and 4 parochial schools. Home of Stevens Institute of Technology. Police 147. Chamber of Commerce, 1 Newark st, John T. Soltmann, sec. Manufactures ships, railroad shops, foods, electrical products, furniture novelties, cranes, pencils, pens, steel, drafting materials, window blinds. Includes Stevens Point, Uptown, and West End. Known as the "Mile Square City." Has numerous water and rail terminals. The West Shore R.R. and Erie R.R. have freight stations in the City. Ferry service is now augmented by the tunnel traffic in Holland and Lincoln Tunnels in Jersey City and Weehawken.
