Description Four photographs of the Hoboken piers taken aboard the passenger ship S.S. Amerika in the Hudson River, no date, circa 1910-1914. Black paper album leaf with 4 drymounted sepia-tone prints, 3-1/4" high x 4-1/4" wide; calligraphed title in gold ink across bottom: "Piers of Hoboken, N.J. Taken from S.S Amerika." Photographer and originator of album not indicated and unknown. Reverse of leaf blank. Leaf, 8-5/8" high, has apparently been trimmed to 12" wide (album post or lacing holes not present.) Unenhanced tiffs media archive.

The ship was an ocean liner (entered service Oct. 1905) of the Hamburg-American Line whose American home port was Hoboken. The photos were taken onboard the vessel, whether departing or arriving is not known and it is curious that it traveled as far upriver as Pier 5 (Fifth Street Pier) when the Hamburg-American piers were near 1st and 2nd Streets.

Seen are the piers (and signs) of the Hamburg-American Line, North German Lloyd Line and Holland America Line.

Photo [1], upper left: view southwest; Hamburg American Line Pier 2 at the left; North German Lloyd Lines piers at the center and right.

Photo [2], lower left: view west; North German Lloyd Lines piers at the left and center; Holland America Line Fifth Street Pier.

Photo [3], upper right: similar to upper left plus a tugboat in the foreground.

Photo [4], lower right: view is west; the two Hamburg American Line piers are to the left and the two North German Lloyd piers are to the right. A detail image of the lower left corner of this photo show the Hoboken Terminal Building at 70-72 Hudson St. with the large advertising sign on it and the Steneck Building at 95 River St. These building help to date them as at least 1909 or later up to World War I (the S.S. Amerika was interned 1914 and later became the U.S.S. America.)
