Record: DisinHAIRited. By Gerome Ragni and James Rado. Music arranged and conducted by Galt MacDermot. RCA Records, New York, 1970. LSO-1163. Single 12" 33 rpm record with double album cover (see note below about cover.) Studio recording of 18 songs.
A Ragni Rado MacDermot Production [Gerome Ragni and James Rado were Hoboken residents. This team with Galt MacDermott created "Hair," the rock musical, which opened in 1967 at the Public Theater and ran on Broadway from 1968-1972.] Album cover concept by Ragni and Rado plus inside photos of the cast by them. [It is not stated if Ragni and Rado composed the music and if it was only arranged by MacDermott.]
Excerpted from album liner notes credited to Nat Shapiro, the production coordinator:
..."DisinHAIRited" is an extension, amplification and a continuation of "Hair." Some of its songs were first written or projected for the original New York Shakespeare Festival production, some for Broadway and some for this recording. This is not an original cast album. (Actually, we don't know what it is.) At the very least, however, you can be sure that it is drawn from the same outrageous, funny and powerful bag of wonders in which "Hair" took root.
"DisinHAIRited" was recorded over a two-week period early in November, 1969 and features the authors in their original roles as Claude and Berger (among other things) and members of past and present tribes in fresh choral and solo guises. Through it all, Galt MacDermot arranged, conducted and played piano while sweet straight folks from RCA wandered around wondering what the hell was going on in Studio C. They know now.
Also noted on the album:
In traditional primitive communist tribal spirit, "DisinHAIRited" has been conceived as a cooperative production in which all performers will share in royalties.
Note about album cover: the album front title is at the right edge near the sleeve opening; the front and back has a photo that covers the front and back and was intended to be turned sideways to be viewed the full length of the album. It is seen in image 1 in that attitude. Images 3 and 4 show the front and back in their original orientation as they would appear when it was sitting on a shelf with spine title running vertically.
